How To Find The Best Format For A Research Paper Presentation
Finding the best format for the presentation of your research paper depends on the facilities available, the subject matter of your research paper and your ability as a performer. No matter how well you may have researched and written your research paper, its presentation is a whole new ballgame. The key points for you to consider in selecting the best platform or format are as follows.
- Who is in the audience?
- What is the capacity of the venue and the anticipated number of attendees?
- What facilities does the venue have for use in your presentation?
Obviously you will know the content of your research paper but it is most important that you understand the difference between handing in a written document as opposed to speaking about and giving a presentation on a written document. You will not be reading the research paper in full. You may quote or read small sections but this is an oral presentation.
Knowing the number and type of people who will be in the audience will influence the way in which you present your research paper. If the audience is predominantly made up of people who know all about your subject matter then obviously you will look to give a different type of presentation to that if the audience, generally speaking, are new to your topic.
You then need to know whether or not your presentation will be on what could be described as an intimate basis as opposed to one with a large gathering where you will not be able to make individual eye contact with everyone. These factors will influence the type of presentation you make.
Finally being aware of the technology and facilities available in the venue is essential. If you have prepared a series of slides than becoming familiar with the equipment is important. If you will be using a clip-on microphone or some other type of device, the earlier you become familiar with the equipment the better.
As for the actual presentation, then it's important that you start with a bang. Work on your opening statement so that you can present it fluently and with conviction. You need to grab the attention of the audience right from the beginning. Practice speaking in your normal voice but understand the two key factors are that everybody must be able to hear and understand what it is you have to say.
