Summarizing a research paper is a tough job as it has to include all the relevant points but in a short and crisp denotation. Looking at the summary a reader would be able to understand what the paper is on and what are the different aspects dealt with in the paper. Therefore the role a summary plays is highly important and thus needs equal attention and thoroughness.
The language used should not be too descriptive and yet must be able to convey the most important points of the research so that the readers develop a keener interest to go through the entire paper so as to know more and get into more details. Writing a summary is a skill in itself and is an indispensable part of a research work. And in order to get it right the concept and the outcome of the research have to be clear to the scholar. Without clarity, it would be difficult to bring down the entire thing into just a few lines. And regardless of the length of the paper, brevity is always important.
How to Write a Research Paper Summary
Even though it requires you to be precise and pay attention to it, writing a summary is also not that difficult a task if you know how to go about it. There are a few things that should be kept in mind while writing a summary. They are,
- You can go to the introduction part of the paper that contains the thesis and prepare the kind which would basically tell what the paper is about. Include the main points or arguments in your summary so as to create a sense of curiosity within the readers.
- This should not contain any person opinion in it on the research paper. It should be factual and take a neutral stand.
- Make sure it only contains the most relevant points and there is no unnecessary discussion or example. Thus it is important that you stick to the point.
- It should be a concise write up and should not exceed a certain word limit. All the points should be included by using as minimum words as possible.
- Also do not divulge too much about the research work in this. This would lead to losing of interest and the readers would not feel like going through all of it.
- Avoid using words or terms which require to be explained.
